Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of Little Give. Today we have some incredible guests who are on a mission. Go ahead, introduce yourself, tell us where you're from and tell us what you're all about.

Hi there, I'm Bonnie Clark. I'm a casting producer for the television show Extreme Makeover Home Edition. I'm a Houston native and I'm excited to be looking for families in the greater Houston area.

And I'm Crystal Castaneda. I am a casting associate producer. I work with Bonnie for Extreme Makeover Home Edition and so excited to be looking for families in our hometown of Houston Texas.

Oh my goodness, that is so incredible. So what led y'all to Houston to be the chosen point?

Crystal Castaneda: 0:56

So Houston has so many loving and powerful people in its community. I've seen them come together so many times through hardship, like Hurricane Harvey, for example. So many people in the community helped and either feed their neighbors, went out and looked for lost dogs, went out and volunteered to, you know, in the overcrowded animal shelters. This community really comes together and helps each other and those are the kind of families we want to feature.

Bonnie Clark: 1:33

Totally agree. I mean, houston is a city of resilient people, of helpers, of people that come together, like she said Hurricane, Harvey, the floods, the freezes, people being there for each other, rolling up their sleeves, ready to help their neighbor, their own family members and those are the kind of people that might also benefit from, you know, a new home or a home renovation, which is, you know, what we're here to help with.

I love, I love, love, love everything you're doing. Why don't you take it back a little bit and explain the premise of your show and what it's all about?

Bonnie Clark: 2:11

Great Well Extreme Makeover Home Edition. We are back on ABC. We are the famous Move that Bus show. So we're looking for families that truly need a new home, and that could be for many reasons. It could be, you know, from a weather event, a flood, a freeze, a loss in a family, a loss of a family, business, you know, medical bills, things that were out of their control. Where they're looking for, or they need a new home. They would really benefit from a new home and definitely want to encourage everybody that's listening to think of the families that are the helpers in your community, the people that might be so busy giving or helping others that they may not be helping themselves. So we're open to both homeowners, renters, displaced families you do not have to be a homeowner to be considered, which really opens the door for a lot of people. And then, whoever the family that is selected, they get either, you know, a complete home renovation or a brand new home on us.

Cindy witteman: 3:22

That is so incredible. That's life changing. I mean, I can only imagine how much that would help somebody who was struggling. I saw that that was there was an option for renters. Can you explain a little bit about how that has worked?

Crystal Castaneda: 3:34

Um, renters have a dream of becoming, you know, first-time homeowners, but due to unforeseen circumstances like financial struggles, the rising housing crisis, with the rising prices, we are offering families a possibility for a custom-built home in those cases.

Cindy witteman: 4:00

So would the family need to have some property or, as I was? This is like they don't need to worry about anything. They just apply and they just leave all that hard work and thought process to you guys.

Bonnie Clark: 4:10

That's right, they leave it to us. They leave it to us. So, yeah, so a brand-new home build is on the table as a possibility and we actually have designers standing by ready to tailor a home for the selected family. We just need the family.

Wow, that is so cool. Okay, so these people just would need to either nominate a family Can a family nominate themselves?

Crystal Castaneda: 4:33

Yes, in those cases, I recommend that they fill out the full application form so we have the full story, all their details. It's the nomination form is a bit shorter. So definitely, if you feel like you are a great crannodate for this and you are in need of a new home, definitely apply.

So, with both of you being Houston natives, how cool is it to be doing this huge project. That's really going to be life-changing. How does that feel for you?

Bonnie Clark: 5:02

guys, it's so exciting. I mean, I'm so H-town proud and I know Crystal is too so to be able to come home and focus on my hometown of Houston, our hometown of Houston, it's a thrill. And to imagine when we get to that point, when the build is happening, and to see this all come to fruition, how exciting it's going to be. I really can't wait.

Crystal Castaneda: 5:31

Yeah, this show really does something special and it gives the whole community an opportunity to come together and help one really deserving family. That, I think, is really beautiful and it's amazing to see so very excited to highlight a family in Houston.

Cindy witteman: 5:48

Oh, I cannot wait to see you guys move that bus and give this away. Give us some examples of the types of families that you love to help. I know you had said families that have experienced tragedy or perhaps they had some kind of issue with a flood or other tragedies. Why don't you give us some examples of some people that you would love to see apply for this?

Bonnie Clark: 6:10

Yeah, those are all great examples. It could be families that have adopted children or have had to take in other family members. We definitely welcome multi-generational families where it could be grandparents, parents, kids, grandkids living under the same roof. You know, sometimes there are space issues so they need more space because they welcome more people into their home. So it's that can be a really beautiful thing to see the people that have just put all their own needs aside to help others receive a house where it kind of makes life a little bit more fun. It kind of makes life a little easier and the people that are the helpers sometimes a house like this can help them help more people. So we love the idea of highlighting something like that as well.

Crystal Castaneda: 7:04

Yeah, we find oftentimes that people that really give back to the community don't usually put their names forward for something like this. We're really dependent on nominations when it comes to people that give back, like firefighters, volunteers, teachers, nurses, first responders. That way, we have an opportunity to hear their story, even though they might not put their names in for something like this.

Cindy witteman: 7:33

So what would you say to that family out there who's feeling like it couldn't be them? What would you say to the family who knows they meet the qualifications for this but they're terrified or they feel like they would never get picked?

Bonnie Clark: 7:47

Give them some advice you will never get picked if you don't apply or if someone doesn't nominate you.

Bonnie Clark: 7:53

So just go ahead and do it, fill out the application. Extreme makeovercastingcraincom. Put yourself out there and let us help you, help other people. There's no reason. I would say don't have any regrets, don't think, oh, this could be us and then not give it a shot. And for those of you that are listening, if it's not you, you know, think about the families that that really deserve this, really need it and probably won't apply, so might depend on you to nominate them.

Crystal Castaneda: 8:29

That was well said. We read every single application, even if you're nervous, even if you think you won't get picked. We read them all. You never know. I encourage everyone to apply because it's an opportunity to get your story out there.

Also get that nice new house that you can use, like y'all said a moment ago, to help others to keep doing what you're doing. I think it's amazing what you guys are up to and I love this show. I love the concept. I love everything about it. This show is all about highlighting ordinary people doing extraordinary things to help others. I know that this show came from someone who was doing just that, and then each and every one of you on the crew who are there working hard every day to make this happen for these families. The families have not been chosen yet, and so people go on there and apply. There is so much opportunity here. Everybody out there. Please don't be afraid. Go and make that application you never know or nominate that person you know might need that help. Can you give the audience a little bit of what happens once they submit that application?

Bonnie Clark: 9:40

Like Crystal said, we go through every application and we get on the phone. We talk to a lot of the families. We get to know them better throughout the application process. Sometimes they will send in photos, they'll send in videos so we can learn about their current home situation, learn about them as a family. So we definitely wanna encourage people to do that so we can get to know them, and it's a positive experience. Going through the casting process, a lot of families have told me that they feel heard and seen just from the process and we're honored by every application. So we hope that no one will hesitate and they'll just go for it.

Crystal Castaneda: 10:25

What about you, crystal? Yeah, I'm not sure there's not much to add there. We go through every application and we call a lot of them to get some more information. We really wanna flesh out their stories and make sure we have the full picture and see if they would be a good fit.

Hi, my name is Justin Clark and I'm the president of the Board of Directors for Driving Single Parents, a 501C3 nonprofit serving the citizens of San Antonio and Bear County, texas. I'm here today to tell you a little bit about the great work that our organization is doing for the citizens of San Antonio. What you're about to see is just a few photos and videos of the way that we're changing lives for single parents in and around San Antonio, texas. Our first giveaway took place in April of 2017, just one short month after the formation of our organization. John, a Bear County resident, was the victim of a horrible drunk driver incident. He and his daughter survived the crash and we were so proud to give our first car to this deserving family. Fast forward to 2020, a very difficult year for nonprofits, we were able to secure four vehicles for single parents in need. Our organization, including our Board of Directors, list of Partners and portfolio of people we've been able to help in San Antonio, continues to grow, and it's all thanks to donors and local community organizations that have helped us along the way. This giveaway took place in 2021 and shows that we continue to help single parents even after the struggles brought about by COVID-19. Because of limited funds and the overwhelming need.

We at Driving Single Parents are incredibly selective with the people we help. Some are victims of domestic violence. Others had a spouse pass away tragically or otherwise fell on hard times. These single parents show adversity in the face of challenge and aren't looking for a handout. We offer a hand up and help get them back in the driver seat. Many of the single parents we help go on to graduate college, get promotions, get married, mentor others and some have even been so touched by the gift we gave them that they have decided to join our Board of Directors to pay it forward and ensure the continued growth of our organization. I was just thinking about that. You were like reading my mind. That brings me back to the Houston thing. You know, like the helpers, so it is exciting. It takes I don't know hundreds, I think, to come out and help with the build. So that's another reason that Houston is a perfect location for this, because I know we're going to have lots of helpers and I think there's a volunteer form that gets put up online once we have that build date. Is that would you agree with that, crystal A volunteer form?

Crystal Castaneda: 15:28

right? I believe so, but I don't have the dates or anything like that.

Cindy witteman: 15:34

Well, all of that would be available on the website, right?

Bonnie Clark: 15:37

Yeah, once we get closer to the build date, absolutely yes. And as I talk to people throughout the process, a lot of people will say to me along the way oh, when it comes time, I'd like to volunteer, and so I just make a note of their names and numbers so we can reach out to them when that time comes, because it's fun. It's a lot of fun. I've been to a reveal before and it's pretty exciting.

Cindy witteman: 16:02

I'm sure it's extremely exciting. I can't wait. We have family who lives there in Houston and we will definitely be headed that way to be part of this. This is such a cool thing and such a great opportunity for those families out there who are in need. Yay, yes, so exciting. So tell me a little bit about the reboot. So I know that this show is coming out again. It's a brand new season that's coming out this fall. Tell me a little about that and what y'all's mission is the sides just to get people homes.

Bonnie Clark: 16:31

Yeah, so our reboot. We're really excited about our new hosts. So it's Joanna Teplin and Clea Scherer. They are from the Home Edit on Netflix, they have their own show and they are professional organizers. So, with the family that is needing a new build, if they also need help with organization, we might just have the perfect fit the two helpers that can help them with that. So if we ask for a video of your home, don't clean it before you send us the video. Show us your clutter. These women are geniuses. I was a fan of them before this ever came to fruition. They're just geniuses. They create these. They're organizational geniuses. They create these systems that help you with your family routines, labels, organizing pantries, closets, et cetera. So it's kind of an extra bonus that comes on top of a perfect brand new house.

Cindy witteman: 17:38

Yes, I think all families need a little organization, I mean especially whenever you have several kids. I mean, I have six kids and I have three grandkids and, believe me, there is plenty of room for organizing to keep everything neat and tidy with all of that going on, Absolutely, and decluttering a home makes you come home to a less stressful environment.

Crystal Castaneda: 18:01

Everyone wants to come home and be at peace, so removing the clutter from the equation really helps that out.

Bonnie Clark: 18:11

Absolutely. We'll clean your house if we ask for a video.

Good. Number one rule why? And number two rule don't clean your house if we ask for a video.

So what has been y'all's best part of being part of this team?

Crystal Castaneda: 18:30

Oh, meeting the families, talking to them, learning their stories, seeing and hearing about all they do for the community 100%. It's a really rewarding job when you get to hear all these amazing stories and know that at the end of the day, we're helping a family.

Bonnie Clark: 18:54

Yes, we're inspired on a daily basis by the resilience of families, the never give up attitude, the staying positive through tough times. We see that every day and we're inspired and motivated by that Absolutely.

Cindy witteman: 19:12

I can only imagine how touching that is to know that you are a part of this big project. That's really really, really not just changing the lives of the families who are moving into the new house, but also all those people who pull together to help build that house. They all have, I'm sure, a personal stake in it and feel like they also did something. So it's just that ripple effect that you guys are there working hard on the show and then all these people show up to help the construction crew and everybody pitches in a hand to help and that causes a ripple effect of love and kindness and everything that this show is about. So I just think it's extraordinary what you all are doing. Do y'all have a little bit of a history of how this show got started?

Bonnie Clark: 19:59

I don't know if I know the history. It was a really long time ago. This show's been around a long time. We took a little break. We're excited to be back, but yeah, this was a huge success a long time ago.

Cindy witteman: 20:13

Yes, I remember I used to watch it. Every episode I would watch it. I love it, and I was in fact watching it again last night. It's so impactful.

Bonnie Clark: 20:22

And you were yelling move that bus from your couch, weren't you?

Cindy witteman: 20:25

Oh, absolutely Absolutely. We're all the whole family Move that bus because it is that moment and then when you see the family, just their reaction and the anticipation and the buildup. So why don't you give us a little bit of details about, maybe a past giveaway that y'all have done recently?

Bonnie Clark: 20:42

So we have filmed our first episode. The thing with Crystal and I is a lot of times we're not present for filming. We get to know the families online or over the phone, but we're not always there for filming, and so we recently were able to just get a sneak peek at what it looked like from the first one we did for the reboot, and it actually brought me to tears. I knew this was going to be good. It was beyond expectations. Watching it brought me to tears. It was so good and so moving and so well done. I'll let Crystal speak on that, but yes, can't wait for the premiere.

Crystal Castaneda: 21:29

Definitely a tear-dricker. I was very moved and so grateful that they got a new home. They really deserved it. All these families that we speak to deserve a new home, but it's always so great to see when it comes together and that was very moving. It also brought me to tears, choking me up, thinking about it.

Cindy witteman: 22:00

I can only imagine I mean you guys get a real close association with the families and having those conversations and really getting to the buildup of the giveaway itself. I can only imagine how y'all really become close to the family and have all that empathy for them and so much excitement for the giveaway and that moment when their life changes. Because it is a life changing moment. It definitely is. And then I know a lot of times when people go through tragic situations or stress or whatever you know ails them, they can feel so alone. And to see that when these families get chosen, not only do they get chosen by you guys, but the community shows up and chooses to, chooses to pitch in, chooses to help, and that, even despite all the struggles they may be experiencing in that moment, that right there can really, I'm sure, just make somebody's life feel so much greater and so much gratitude for all of these incredible people who may have never even met them before, but yet they're there building their house, pitching in a helping hand.

Bonnie Clark: 23:04

Yeah, I think everybody's gonna walk away feeling very good and inspired themselves and happy that they were there the volunteers that do show up. I don't think they're gonna regret it.

Absolutely so. When is this new season airing?

We don't have an official air date, so we're waiting for that with great anticipation. We're excited. But I will take this moment to say that, although Crystal and I were focusing on Houston, we are casting in other specific cities. So we're looking in Atlanta, charlotte, nashville, dallas. I think those are all the cities Crystal can let me know if I'm forgetting any. Well, I really wanna know a little bit more about you two ladies, so I wanna know how did you get associated with this show and what are you so excited about for what's to come, besides, of course, the obvious these families getting homes?

Crystal Castaneda: 24:47

Yeah, so I started working with Rebecca Rosy Chan. She's our casting director for this show, For a show called Rescue Babies, and ever since then I really enjoyed the projects she's brought me on. They're very uplifting, heartwarming and two years later, I believe, since starting to work with her. She asked me to jump on this project and I've been working on it since August, July, Since July. What about you, Bonnie?

Bonnie Clark: 25:31

Yeah, I mean, a lot of us in the casting world were freelance, which means we go from production company to production company or network to network, and Crystal and I were lucky enough to meet on a show gosh 2018, I think so we're always excited when we get to come back together on a project, and we've done that multiple times throughout these years, and so I did Rescue Babies with her and Rebecca as well, and that was a really fun show about the animals and kids. So we love doing positive shows with Rebecca, so we're grateful for that. But I've worked on a lot of shows throughout the years, and this one is definitely one of my favorites.

Would you give the audience an example of a little thing that they can do in their community? That might just be a little give on their end but might make a big impact on the other side.

Bonnie Clark: 28:28

I would say to check in on the helpers in your life, in your community, in your neighborhood, who are the people that are doing all the giving, and check in on them, see how they're doing. Sometimes they're so busy helping others they're not letting anyone know that they need help. So I would check in on the helpers and maybe they might even need a new house.

Cindy witteman: 28:56

That's a beautiful example. You're right. There's so often times that individuals are just always out doing and doing and doing for everyone else their children, their parents, their friends, their neighbors. They're always helping, but they don't even take care of themselves. So they need somebody to give them a little nudge here and there. So I love that little give. So the next question is would you give the audience an example of a time in your life where somebody might have done something small for you that was just a little give on their end but really made an impact on you and in your life?

Crystal Castaneda: 29:26

Yes, absolutely. I have a great story about almost hitting floodwaters on my way home and seeing salvation at a water burger. They opened their doors, they let me in, they let me ride out the storm in there. So I didn't ruin my car in the floodwaters, they didn't make me or anything. I was very grateful. I think about it often. I remember their kindness all the time.

Cindy witteman: 30:00

Wow, that is. That's just such a little give. They had a location there. Just open the door and let you in to wait out a storm. That is really awesome. Kudos to Water Burger. That's amazing. I love Water Burger. I love that. Give the audience some examples of the type of people that you really want to help and you want to see. Get this new home.

Bonnie Clark: 30:20

Yeah, so we really want to help the helpers. We want to at least think, we want to be considering the helpers. So take a minute to think in your life, who are the people making a difference? An example that comes to my mind are volunteer coaches. These are usually people that are working full-time jobs but then they are spending time volunteering for other people's children multiple times a week for seasons at a time. Probably that is resulting in them not being able to take care of their own needs as much as they'd like. Their house needs that sort of thing. So perhaps a volunteer coach in your life might be a great person to nominate. And folks that truly are in need of a new home. So it could be the home that they're in is not in great shape, or it can also be a space issue where they need a lot more space because maybe they've brought in grandparents or family members in need or community members in need.

Crystal Castaneda: 31:22

That's what I find. Think of the single mother working multiple jobs taking care of her kids might not have time to do housekeeping, keep up the home, make those renovations that are needed on her own. Single fathers, nurses working 12-hour shifts, firefighters, outstanding volunteers, teachers, people that work within the community, might not be thinking about putting themselves for an opportunity like this, so we might be more dependent on nominations for families like that.

Bonnie Clark: 32:07

Yeah, teachers. That's a good one, because you always hear about teachers that are spending their own money on supplies for their classroom or staying after hours for kids that might not have a parent at home. So they're helping other families, their students and the families of their students, and which means they're not at their own home taking care of their own needs. So, yeah, teachers, volunteers volunteers, givers, absolutely.

Cindy witteman: 32:38

What about if a person maybe they had a tragic situation, they had to escape that situation and had to live with a loved one, maybe they're renting from a brother or a father, or they're in a rental situation in that way? Would they still qualify?

Crystal Castaneda: 32:53

Absolutely, Absolutely. Families that take in other family members, multi-generational households definitely.

Cindy witteman: 33:04

Wow, multi-generational households. I love that. That's incredible because that happens so often, where people just kind of end up living together in a home that's too small for them. Maybe the house isn't in dire distress, but they really have outgrown it and they don't have space for everyone, and a new house would certainly make their situation a lot more livable. Have you all seen that before?

Bonnie Clark: 33:25

Yes, and that's the great thing about our designers Like they're on standby, they're ready for action. So, like it depends on what that family needs. You know, we've run into families where there's multiple people working from home so they need specific, divided work spaces. That would make their lives a lot easier. Or, like you were saying, like the grandparents are moving in so they need a separate space from the parents and the grandchildren. So our designers are ready to help with specific needs of the family that's going to be selected. So we're ready to hear what your challenges are with your current house.

That's awesome, so I guess that would also include somebody who maybe has a disability, maybe they are an amputee, or maybe they have a wheelchair, or maybe they have limited mobility. Those are all things that designers could help with as well.

Absolutely. The larger size hallways yeah, for ways to make their lives easier, absolutely, and for those around them, the helpers in their family that they're living with as well.

We've got individuals that are out there applying and nominating others. What is the deadline?
